2026 Laureates

🧠
Physiology or Medicine · 5 Oct

Karl Deisseroth · Peter Hegemann · Georg Nagel

For: discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.
  • Hegemann (Germany, Humboldt Univ. Berlin) – found channelrhodopsins in single-celled algae: light-sensitive proteins that act as ion channels.
  • Nagel (Germany, Univ. Würzburg) – worked with Hegemann; showed they are light-controlled ion channels.
  • Deisseroth (USA, Stanford / HHMI) – put these proteins into specific neurons, making them a working tool for brain research.
  • Uses: study neural circuits for behaviour, emotion, memory, disorders.
Awarded by: Nobel Assembly, Karolinska Institute (Stockholm)
🧠 "LIGHT" → Medicine mein light jalao, neuron chalao!"Hegemann–Nagel ne dhoondha, Deisseroth ne chalaya" = Discover → Develop.

Physics · 6 Oct

Francis Halzen (solo)

For: decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.
  • IceCube = detector in ~1 km³ of clear Antarctic ice at the South Pole.
  • Thousands of light sensors catch faint Cherenkov light flashes when a neutrino interacts; timing/pattern gives energy and direction.
  • Opened neutrino astronomy: a new window besides light.
  • Neutrino = neutral, nearly massless "ghost" particle; passes through matter easily.
Belgian-born American · b. 23 Mar 1944, Tienen · Univ. of Wisconsin–Madison
Awarded by: Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
🧠 "ICE" → Halzen ne barf ko hi detector bana diya! Antarctica mein bhooton (ghost particles) ka shikaar.Ice + Cube = IceCube = 1 km³

Chemistry · 7 Oct

Henri B. Kagan · Kenso Soai

For: discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.
  • Asymmetric synthesis: making mainly one mirror-image (chiral) form of a molecule.
  • Kagan (France, b. 1930; Paris-Sud) – non-linear effects: small change in catalyst's purity gives a disproportionately large change in product chirality (1986).
  • Soai (Japan, b. 1950; Tokyo Univ. of Science) – asymmetric autocatalysis (Soai reaction): product catalyses its own formation and amplifies a tiny imbalance.
  • Relevance: origin of homochirality (why life uses one hand); drug making.
Awarded by: Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
🧠 "MIRROR" → Seedha haath vs ulta haath. Kagan = "Kam-zyada" (non-linear), Soai = "So-ya" (khud ko bana ke so gaya = auto-catalysis).Kagan–Soai = Fr–Jp = KS
📜
Literature · 8 Oct

Anne Carson (solo)

For: "bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature."
  • Canadian poet, essayist, translator, classicist · b. 21 Jun 1950, Toronto.
  • Blends poetry, prose, essay, mythology, translation, criticism.
  • Autobiography of Red (1998) – verse novel retelling the myth of Geryon and Heracles; sequel Red Doc>.
  • Others: Eros the Bittersweet (1986), Men in the Off Hours, The Beauty of the Husband, Nox (2010), If Not, Winter (Sappho translations), Norma Jeane Baker of Troy (2019).
Awarded by: Swedish Academy (Stockholm)
🧠 "RED" → Carson ki Red kitaab: Greek devta ki nayi kahani, kavita + nibandh mix!Carson = Canada · Classics · Creative forms (3 C)
⚖️
Peace · 9 Oct

Navanethem "Navi" Pillay (solo)

For: efforts to promote peace and international law; ensuring war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.
  • South African jurist · b. 23 Sep 1941, Durban.
  • Judge, later President, of the ICTR (International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda); judge at the ICC.
  • UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, 2008–2014.
  • Landmark Akayesu case (1998, ICTR): rape recognised as an act of genocide when committed with intent to destroy a group.
Awarded by: Norwegian Nobel Committee (Oslo)
🧠 "JUSTICE" → Pillay = Pillar of Law: kanoon ka khamba! Rwanda se Hague tak.Akayesu = "Aaku-ne sazaa" – rape = genocide ka hissa
📈
Economic Sciences · 12 Oct

Robert E. Hall · Michael Woodford

For: "microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation".
  • Built macro models from decisions of individual households and firms, not just statistical links between inflation/output.
  • Role of expectations: forward-looking spending, saving, pricing.
  • Central bank communication (forward guidance) shapes behaviour.
  • Helps respond to shocks (energy price rise, sudden consumption fall); answers 1970s stagflation gaps in Keynesian models.
Hall – Stanford (b. 1943) · Woodford – Columbia (b. 1955) · both USA
Officially: Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel · by Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
🧠 "SHOCK" → Hall mein Wood (lakdi) ka sahara: economy ke jhatke sambhalo!Hall = Household decisions, Woodford = Words of central bank

Optogenetics in 6 Steps

1 Gene for light protein→2 Put in chosen neurons→3 Protein appears on membrane→4 Shine light→5 Channel opens/closes→6 Neuron ON/OFF, watch behaviour
🧠 "GPLSCN" → "Gaana Play Karo, Switch Chalao, Neuron nachao": Gene → Place → Light → Switch → Channel → Neuron.
